Freezing temperatures in Kabul
Freezing winter temperatures are another major threat to street children in Afghanistan
street children in Afghanistan in the winter
Street children in Afghanistan are already threatened from all sides and their lives are in constant danger. Often they are the only ones in the family who work for bread and rent. Many have lost their fathers and brothers to war and civil war and their mothers are not allowed to work. On the streets, they are in imminent danger of being kidnapped for human trafficking and abuse, or imprisoned because children are not allowed to work on the streets. But what should they do? The families' survival depends on them. Now, in winter, there is this terrible cold on top of everything and with it another danger for these children. Who cares, if they will freeze to death? If they have something warm to wear or if they are sick? Do they have a choice? They can choose between starving or freezing. So they work on the streets from morning to night in snow, wind and freezing temperatures. And if they don't earn enough, if they don't find enough wood, cardboard and paper, they can't even light a fire in their poor dwellings and their mothers can't bake or cook . Often they are not paid for their services on the street. Then, after a long, hard day's work, they go to sleep hungry and cold.
Luckily there are wonderful people in Kabul who take care of such street children. See our project: The Afghan Street Children Project.
